FaithDiaries: Dr Sam Ekundayo, On overcoming gambling and how to find your purpose

Hey people!

Another Friday is upon us and you know what that means? Thazzz right. Its another day for another post and I am so excited because today’s post is a collabo! whoooppp!

pumpgirl

Can you remember the toothaches and the body of christ post where I talked about collaborating instead of competing in the church and I shared that I would be doing more collabos with other people to share their faith stories? No? Then read the post here

Anyway God made a way in the most unexpected way (I know I should be a rapper lol) I had the privilege of interviewing Dr Sam Ekundayo of www.samuelekundayo.com and it was such an insightful interview because he shared so many juicy details about himself.

Read and enjoy:

Me: So who is Sam Ekundayo? Tell us about yourself.

Dr Sam: Thanks for having me on your blog, Fadekemi. I am very grateful. My name is Dr. Samuel Ekundayo. I am a full-time academic (IT Lecturer) in one of New Zealand higher institutions. I have a Ph.D. in Business Information Systems.

I am also a preacher and motivational speaker and the mandate of God on my life is to help people discover God’s purpose for them so they can live a fulfilling, meaningful, significant and influential life to the glory of God. I am married to my wonderful friend turned wife – Dr. Blessing Ekundayo.

Me: Oh nice, you are married. So how did you meet her and how did you know she was the right one?

Dr Sam: We met online through a friend in 2007 and didn’t meet until 2010. I knew she was the one because God told me. I heard the word, prayed about it, sought confirmation from friends and family and I got it. Read a summary of the story here – https://www.facebook.com/oluwamayowa/posts/10155579899196645

Me: Online? wow! So this means you can meet your spouse anywhere and seeking confirmation before choosing a spouse is very important. Thanks for this nugget.

So If you could advise your 18-year-old self, what would it be?

Dr Sam: Oh, at 18, I knew where I was headed in life but I was not aware of the values and principles to get me there. The good news is, now I am working hard every day on the principles to get me there and they are working. So, if I could advise my 18-year-old self, I would say, have a dream, have a vision, have goals, but don’t stop there, find out the principles to get you to your dreams, visions, and goals. Principles sustain miracles. A lot of young people fall by the wayside because they are only a bundle of passion with no values and principles. When you combine the clarity of vision with values and principles, you become an unstoppable force.

 Me: Wow profound!! Tweet this!!!!

Me: On lighter note, can you remember the last time you cried?

Dr Sam: Chai! Does watching a movie count? Lol. I watched the War Room not long ago and I could not control my tears. Amazing movie. And yes, I could be quite emotional like that – ask my wife lol.

Me: A movie??

LOL Interesting! Well I’ve also seen War Room and it was truly a good movie, I even reviewed it on my blog. (click here to read)

Me: So to the spiritual deets. How did your relationship with God start?

Dr Sam: My relationship with God started on 30th November 1993. It was the inauguration service of a church my Dad pioneered in the Northern part of Nigeria then. He had invited one of his mentors to speak and that was when I consciously and intentionally gave my life to Christ. I have not looked back since, to the glory of God. And I am not saying I am perfect but knowing God as my father and being able to relay even the littlest of things to him (like what to say in a certain situation) is massive for me. Sometimes, I’ll just ask questions like “God, what can I do to fix this?” I do this intentionally a lot and it works wonders because He responds.

Me: AMAZING! Knowing God as Abba Father just makes everything easier for us in understanding who we are as CHILDREN of GOD. Very key tbh. Thank you sharing that story.

So I want to know, Why are you called the purpose preacher? And how did it all start?

Dr Sam: I believe every life has a message it preaches. God has given every one of us a ‘word’ for the world! My word is PURPOSE. The mandate of God on my life is to help men and women discover why they were born and created and to live life fulfilling it. So, no matter where I speak or what I am invited to speak on, it always goes back to the purpose message. It all started in mid-2016 (even though I’ve been public speaking since High School) when God spoke vividly to me, and He said, “Son, your prosperity is in your purpose”. And of course, that purpose is to help others discover their purpose. I have since focused my life on that instruction and I am seeing massive results. My life is now more stress-free, fulfilling and influential.

Me: Obedience is so important! I like this particular statement:

“Son, your prosperity is in your purpose”

Truly our prosperity is in our purpose not just financially, but in everything! Our soul, health, everything, when you’re doing what you’ve been called to do, you will definitely prosper.

The sad thing though is alot of millennials honestly don’t know their purpose and what God has called them to do.

Me: For you, How did you find/know your purpose and calling? Any tips in how a young person can find their calling/purpose?

Dr Sam: This is the same thing I teach people. I went to God and asked Him, “Lord, why am I here?” And He said, “…to encourage men and women into my purpose for their lives to my glory” (Jeremiah 1:5). Also, since the age of 8, when my Dad bought me the book, “I Saw Heaven” by Roberts Liardon on how he saw heaven at the age of 8, coupled with the several VHS of Reinhard Bonnke I watched growing up (God bless my parents for such wonderful upbringing), the sight of men of God preaching always excite me. I dreamed to be on such stages speaking.

Tips to find your purpose:

1.    Go to God in prayer. You’ll be amazed how this works. Well, of course, for this to work, you have to develop a relationship with God – know How He speaks to you. In fact, it is the fastest way to know God’s purpose for your life because He will just reveal it to you and you do not even have to do any soul-searching or fact-finding, etc.

2.     You can also look at the things you do so excellently well. I always encourage people in my seminars to write down five things they are supremely qualified to do. For some people, its cooking, for others, it could be speaking, fashion design. The kind that you do and people say you’re awesome! One or two on that list is what you’re born to do.

If you use my purpose worksheet, I explain what you then have to do to develop those things to live an influential life.

3.     The people you admire and love – people that are sort of becoming your ideal person. The kinds of people you want to be like. See, there is an inherent desire to passionately want to be like someone you’re born to be (I am not sure if this makes sense typing it as it does if I was saying it). If you’ve always wanted to be like Oprah Winfrey, for instance, and you find yourself just having dreams of being a talk-show host, then you could be built for that.

The goal, therefore, isn’t to become Oprah, but to be you! Learn from her, learn what it takes to be like her but don’t be her!

If anyone is reading this and you haven’t discovered God’s purpose for your life and you want to, be sure to reach out to me. I have developed a purpose worksheet to help you with that.

Me: WOW! Thank you Dr Sam. Very profound lessons there! Honestly! I know so many people will benefit from these tips.

On a final note, please tell us what the hardest battle you’ve faced in your walk with God and how you overcame it.

Dr Sam: There was a time in my life that I was struggling with gambling. It started with going with unbelieving friends to game houses. Innocently, I’d just pay to play and leave. Gradually, I became good at the game and it was becoming visible. Before I know what was happening, people would place a bet on me to beat someone else. I then became jealous of how someone would put their money on me and win and the devil suggested, “You could put the same money on yourself and win”. That was how it started for me. It became a besetting sin that led into stealing my parent’s money. I knew it would get worse if it continued. So, I started to pray rigorously about it and God, in His faithfulness, rooted me out of that environment. My sanity returned. I have not gambled anymore since then.

Me: Thank you so much for sharing that, It takes courage to own our struggles, overcome it and be able to share with others. It shows complete freedom.

Thank you for your time, any final words?

Dr Sam: If you are reading this, the only way to live a life that pleases God is to have a relationship with Him. I am not just talking about being a Christian. I am talking about honestly walking in His love for you. Communing with Him daily. Having that consciousness He is with you and for you – radiating His presence and glory in all that you do. Yes, this life is possible and all you have to do is ask for it by giving your life to Christ. Ask Jesus to come into your life and be your personal Lord and Saviour and I promise you, your life will never remain the same.

If you are yet to give your life to Christ, there is no sin too terrible that God cannot forgive. He loves you just the way you are. If you will sincerely say this prayer, He will give you a new nature. “Dear Lord, I’m sorry for all my sins, please forgive me. I accept Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Saviour. Amen.”

If you have said this prayer congratulation! It’s the best decision you can ever make. Please find a Bible-believing church to help you learn more about God.
