“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!” (Romans 10:14-15)
Episode 3: Our Good News
“Baby girl i say I say your body na killer oh..”
Bolanle sang along with her music player in her car on her way home as she used her steering as her drum. The music was really loud and she seemed to be enjoying herself. She absolutely loved this particular song. Mad Over You by Runtown.
She noticed the person driving beside her car was trying to tell her something but she ignored. “These old women. What is it again?” She tried not to look towards the woman and acted like she didn’t know the woman just beckoned unto her.
“Way she dey whine am I see fire for her body
And if she follow me go na enjoyment go kill am o
Baby girl you bad oh Girl the way you whine oh.
I dey mad over you girl”
She continued singing when she looked at her phone and noticed she had a call.
She reduced the volume.
It was an unknown number.
She swiped her iPhone’s screen to the right and put it on speaker.
Hello. Hey. Bolanle. It’s Pelumi.
Oh. Hey. Pelumi. I don’t have this number.
Yes. This is my other number. Home yet?
No. Not yet. The traffic on Third Mainland is a serious something. You?
Just got home.
Oh. Nice. So what’s up?
Nothing much. I just feel led to speak to you.
Led? Bolanle heart skipped a bit.
“What do you mean by led?”
I just feel led by the Holyspirit to talk to you. Pelumi explained.
“Oh. That’s interesting” Bolanle responded. “Er. You know I’m not a Christian yeah?”
Pelumi laughed. “Jesus did not come for only christians. He came for everyone. He died for everyone. So the Holyspirit can be accessed by anyone. You don’t have to be a Christian for me to be led to speak to you. Infact. The fact that you’re not a Christian is even the major reason this conversation will be sweeter.”
“I see.” was all Bolanle could say.
“Through out the time we spent together I just kept wanting to talk about it to you. There was just an unease in my spirit to tell you. I didn’t even know you weren’t a christian.”
“Hmm. Interesting.” Bolanle laughed. Then she picked up plantain chips at the back seat while trying to open it she heard Pelumi say something.
“Sorry, What did you say?” She said eating her chips.
“Oh. I said, Have you heard our good news message?”
“Let me guess that Jesus is the son of God?” Bolanle mocked
“Yes. That’s an integral part of our good news message.” Pelumi answered laughing.
“Well. Yes. My best friend is a Christian. A chorister infact. A correct christian. And I can tell you there’s no difference between us. So there’s nothing you want to tell me about Jesus that we haven’t argued about.” Bolanle laughed.
“Oh. Really? You don’t see any difference between you and your Christian bestfriend? That’s quite unfortunate though”
“Well. No. Not exactly. I don’t get. Is there supposed to be a difference?” Bolanle said genuinely confused wondering where this conversation was heading.
Okay. Its fine. I just want to tell you a little about our good news. You said your bestfriend has told you about it right?
“Yeah. When it comes to that topic. Its always an argument” Bolanle laughed. “The thing is I sincerely believe God will not judge everyone based on the Christian’s supposed standard.”
“But Jesus Christ is truly the way, the truth and the life.” Pelumi laughed.
“See I’m not trying to sell religion to you here. I’m telling you about Jesus. Thats our good news. I’m telling you about the love of Christ. Its pure and undiluted.” She continued
Bolanle sighed. “This is my problem with Christians. That Jesus is the only way to get to heaven” She rolled her eyes.
“I hate that christians think theirs is the only way. Now tell me, all those good people that came before Jesus came that never heard about Jesus they would also not go to heaven abi?”
“All them Abraham and David…and Adam that is in your bible. Did they hear about Jesus? Or did they talk about Jesus? So what would happen to them? Or would they be judged differently? Are we saying God would be partial in his judgement?” Bolanle argued.
“Bolanle. This is not a-which-religion-is-better tussle dear. It is not in my place to decide where all those people are going, that is the ones that didn’t hear about Jesus. But what about us that have heard about Him?” Pelumi said
“This is simply a way out. We are offering a way out of bondage of sin through Jesus Christ and offering dominion. It’s not about religion. Jesus is giving a easy access to the throne. That’s why he died.”
“Exactly it’s not about religion! Its about your heart. That’s what God will judge. Many so called Christians are even worse. I am a morally upright person and I believe God won’t cast me away because my heart is good.”
“I commend you dear. Its good to live a life without any sin. But goodness or morality is not enough and you wouldn’t even know if something you are doing is a sin if you don’t have Jesus. All those Christians you are talking about are the black sheep among us and that is not entirely abnormal. It happens. But you can’t base your life choice on their bad lifestyle and you can’t judge the rest of us based on that either.”
“Okay Pelumi. So what exactly do you want now?” Bolanle sighed. She was tired of this gist and this traffic wasn’t helping matters either. At this junction, she would just accept anything Pelumi says so she can leave her alone.
“Not want I want. What God wants. He wants you to become born again.”
“That’s not possible”
“With God Nothing shall be impossible” Pelumi laughed
“Pelumi oh… I’m driving.” She said shaking her head.
“Oh. Sorry. I even forgot. I’ll call you back. Please remember Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through the son.
All you have to do is confess that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sin and God raised him from the dead. Thats all you need to do to be saved. Very easy”
“Thats all?” Bolanle was suddenly interested. How can that be all? She thought there was more to it.
“Yes. That’s all. I’m surprised you’re just hearing this for the first time”
“Well. I am just hearing for the first time that all I have to do is to just believe.
It shouldn’t be hard. Is it not just to believe?”
“It isn’t. Trust me.”
“Okay. I’ll think about it and I will get back to you.” Bolanle said noticing another driver by her side signifying to her that something was up with her tyre.
“No problem. I believe no one gives in except the Holy Spirit wills. I have planted. But only God himself will give the increase”
“I’ll call you back” Bolanle said whining down to pay attention to the other driver.
Then she hung up.
